7 Myths About Selling Gold and Jewellery That Cost Australians Money

After decades in the jewellery trade, we've heard every reason people give for leaving valuable pieces in the drawer — and most of them simply aren't true. Here are the seven myths we bust most often, and the reality behind each one.

Myth 1: "Broken jewellery is worthless"

Reality: gold is gold. A snapped chain, a bent bangle, a ring missing its stone — the metal is valued by weight and purity regardless of condition. With gold prices near record highs in2026, that zip-lock bag of broken bits could genuinely surprise you. The same goes for single earrings that lost their mate years ago.

Myth 2: "I'll get close to what was paid for it"

Reality: the kindest myth to bust early. Retail jewellery prices include the retailer's margin, staffing, rent and marketing — often more than half the ticket price. Second-hand value is based on what the piece actually contains and what the market pays for it. The good news cuts the other way too: gold's rise means older pieces bought decades ago can be worth more than their original price, in metal alone.

Myth 3: "The insurance valuation is what it's worth"

Reality: an insurance valuation estimates the retail cost of replacing your piece brand new— it's deliberately generous, because that's its job. It is not a sale price, and no buyer anywhere pays it. Bring the valuation along anyway; it usefully documents the piece's specifications, even though the number answers a different question.

Myth 4: "Old-fashioned jewellery is worth less"

Reality: often the opposite. Older pieces are frequently higher-carat gold than modern equivalents, and genuine antique and period jewellery — Victorian, Art Deco, mid-century— has a dedicated collector market. Even the diamonds in old pieces, with their romanticOld European and Old Mine cuts, are sought after in their own right. "Dated" and "valuable"are very compatible.

Myth 5: "Without the certificate, my diamond can't be sold"

Reality: certificates help, but qualified buyers grade the stone itself. Valuers trained through GIA and IGI assess your diamond by the same standards the laboratories use — in front of you. A missing certificate should never keep a diamond in the drawer.

Myth 6: "All gold buyers pay about the same"

Reality: if only. Offers for identical pieces can vary enormously, for two reasons. First, buyers' margins differ — some pay a fair rate on the day's price, others bank on you not comparing. Second, and more costly: many buyers only assess the metal. Hand a gold desk a diamond ring or a signed designer piece, and the stones and provenance can be treated as worthless when they might be the majority of the value. Always get a piece with stones or a name assessed by a specialist jewellery buyer, and never be shy about comparing offers.

Myth 7: "Selling jewellery is a seedy, uncomfortable experience"

Reality: it certainly can be — pushy counters, take-it-or-leave-it offers, jewellery whisked"out the back." But it doesn't have to be, and you shouldn't accept it. A proper valuation is private and unhurried, with everything weighed and tested in front of you, the maths explained, your options laid out, and complete freedom to walk away and think. If an experience doesn't look like that, take your pieces elsewhere.

The theme running through all seven

Notice the pattern: every myth either keeps value sitting in a drawer or hands it to the wrong buyer. The antidote to all of them is the same — an honest, transparent assessment by someone qualified to see the whole value of a piece: metal, stones, maker and market.
