Selling Designer Jewellery: Why the Name on the Box Changes Everything
Diamond Loupe | Melbourne Gold & Jewellery Buyers
Here's a mistake we see far too often: someone takes a piece from a famous jewellery house to a cash-for-gold counter, gets paid for the metal weight, and walks away never knowing they left serious money on the table. If your jewellery carries a recognised name — Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and their peers — it plays by completely different rules. Here's what you need to know before selling.
Why designer pieces are worth more than their parts
Melt down a Cartier Love bangle and you get gold — the same gold as any other bangle. But nobody sensible melts a Cartier Love bangle, because collectors around the world will pay a substantial premium for the finished piece. The brand, the design, the craftsmanship and the desirability all carry real market value far beyond metal and stones.
For sought-after pieces from the major houses, the second-hand price can be a multiple of the scrap value. That's the gap between a specialist jewellery buyer and a gold desk — and it's your money.
What drives the premium
The house. The top-tier names command the strongest resale, with certain houses' iconic lines holding value remarkably well year after year.
The piece. Signature designs — the ones people recognise across a dinner table — are the most liquid. Iconic lines from the big houses have waiting lists of second-hand buyers.
Condition. Designer buyers care about condition far more than gold buyers do. Light wear is expected; heavy polishing, resizing by a non-authorised jeweller, or missing elements can dent the premium.
The paperwork and packaging. This is where designer resale differs most from ordinary jewellery. Original boxes, certificates, receipts and service papers meaningfully lift the price, because they make authenticity easy to establish. Never throw away a designer box.
Authenticity, obviously. The market for famous designs attracts fakes, which is why designer pieces must be authenticated by someone who genuinely knows the houses —hallmarks, serial numbers, construction details, the lot.
"I don't have the box or receipt anymore"
Don't panic — you can absolutely still sell. Authentication comes first from the piece itself:the quality of construction, correct hallmarks and serials, the details a trained eye checks in minutes. Paperwork strengthens the price; its absence doesn't sink the sale. Bring what you have, even if it's nothing but the piece.
Sell or consign? For designer pieces, it's a real question
Ordinary gold jewellery is nearly always a straight sale. Designer pieces are exactly the category where consignment earns its keep: because the strongest prices come from collectors and dealers seeking specific pieces, placing your item through a dealer network can achieve results an on-the-spot offer can't match.
At Diamond Loupe we'll give you both numbers where we can — what we'd pay today, and what consignment through our network could realistically achieve — and the honest trade-offs between them. Sometimes today's offer is the smart move; sometimes patience pays properly. It depends on the piece, and we'll tell you straight.
A note on inherited designer pieces
Designer jewellery in an estate deserves particular care. Family members often have no idea that Mum's "nice bracelet" is a signed piece worth many times its metal value — and it takes an expert eye to spot the signatures, hallmarks and characteristic construction of the great houses, especially on older pieces where memories of the original purchase are long gone. If an estate includes quality jewellery, have the whole collection assessed by a specialist before anything is sold for scrap. Ten minutes of expertise can change an estate's value dramatically.
