The 4 Cs Explained by a Diamond Buyer (Not a Diamond Seller)

You've probably heard of the 4 Cs — carat, colour, clarity and cut. Most explanations come from people trying to sell you a diamond. Here's the other side of the counter: how the 4 Cs work when you're the one selling, from a buyer who assesses stones every day.

Carat: where the big money moves

Carat is simply weight — one carat is 0.2 grams. But diamond prices don't climb in a straight line with weight; they jump at the sizes people want. A 1.00ct diamond is worth noticeably more per carat than a 0.95ct stone that looks almost identical on the finger, purely because"one carat" is the magic number buyers ask for.

What it means for sellers: if your stone sits at or just above a popular threshold — 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct — you're in a strong position. And don't guess the weight from an old receipt; stones are weighed precisely as part of any proper valuation.

Colour: whiter is rarer

White diamonds are graded from D (completely colourless) down through the alphabet, with faint warmth creeping in as you go. The differences between neighbouring grades are subtle — most people can't spot one grade's difference with the naked eye — but the market prices them distinctly.

What it means for sellers: older Australian jewellery often contains warmer stones (J–M range), which are perfectly lovely but priced accordingly. On the flip side, if your stone turns out to be a genuine fancy colour — a natural yellow, pink or champagne — it plays by entirely different rules and can be worth a serious premium. Australia's own Argyle pinks are among the most valuable diamonds on earth.

Clarity: the birthmarks inside

Almost every natural diamond has tiny internal characteristics — the trade calls them inclusions. Clarity grades run from Flawless down through VVS, VS, SI and I grades, based on what's visible under 10x magnification.

What it means for sellers: here's an honest tip — the grades that matter most for resale are the ones around the "eye-clean" boundary. A stone whose inclusions can't be seen with the naked eye sells well even with a modest clarity grade. One with an obvious black mark front and centre is harder to place. A good valuer will show you your stone under the loupe and explain exactly what they're seeing. (It's in our name, after all.)

Cut: the one that makes it sparkle

Cut is the only C humans control, and it's arguably the most important for beauty. A well-cut diamond bounces light back at you in that unmistakable fire and brilliance; a poorly cut

one looks dull no matter how good its other grades are.

What it means for sellers: modern, excellently cut round brilliants are the most liquid stones in the market. But don't despair over older cuts — Old European cuts, Old Mine cuts and other antique styles have a devoted collector market, and a charming old stone in an original Art Deco setting can be worth more left exactly as it is. Never recut an antique diamond before getting expert advice.

The fifth C nobody mentions: the Certificate — and the sixth: the market

A grading report from GIA or IGI supports your price, though you don't need one to sell (we grade stones ourselves, to the same standards). And beyond every grade on paper sits the real market: what shapes, sizes and styles buyers are chasing right now. That's where a buyer with a live dealer network earns their keep — knowing not just what your diamond is, but where it will sell best.
